a5c7b9f00b What if a gun had a soul? A gigantic mobile weapon from another planet is sent to destroy Earth, but is damaged on arrival and loses its memory. It is soon befriended by a young boy, Hogarth, who is an outcast at school and relishes the chance to have a real friend. However, soon the paranoid government agent Kent Mansley arrives in town, determined to destroy the giant at all costs. "The Iron Giant" is based upon the 1968 story, 'The Iron Man,' by the British poet laureate Ted Hughes. The film is about a giant metal machine that drops from the sky and frightens a small town in Maine in 1957, only to find a friend named Hogarth, and ultimately finds its humanity and saves the townspeople from their fears and prejudices. An ambitious take on Ted Hughes' 1968 children's book The Iron Man, director Brad Bird's The Iron Giant works well as both archetype-infused allegory and heartstring-tugging tale of friendship. Set in small town Maine in the 1950s at the height of Cold War paranoia, the film explores the relationship between a lonely, fatherless boy (a photo on a nightstand hints that the father was a combat pilot killed in WWII) and a monstrously huge, hulking metal behemoth (the origins of which are brilliantly left to the imagination). The animation marks a welcome contrast from the virtually ubiquitous Disney template, with the human characters bearing a stylized, comic book exaggeration that fits perfectly with the story material. The Iron Giant has more than enough imagination and sparkle to interest kids and adults, and nicely balances its action-adventure aspirations with a solidly-crafted sense of moral purpose. The good and the bad of this animated film are extreme.

THE GOOD - Bright, beautiful colors make this film a real visual treat. The 5.1 digital sound provides great audio, too, with surround coming out of all five speakers and a sub-woofer, especially when the huge iron robot walks, really makes the sound dynamite. THE BAD - The story is disgusting, beginning with the annoying lead kid who, in typical Hollywood style, lies and deceives and yet is the hero.

The film is chock full of liberal leanings such as anti-FBI (no FBI agent would be this bad), anti-gun ("guns kill" is repeated over and over), anti-hunting, anti- authority, pro-Communist, pro-rebel, etc, etc. All of the Liberal mindset. A lot of this preaching comes in the name of "exposing the 1950s paranoia," according to the director of the film, who verified my opinion in an accompanying documentary feature on the DVD.

Throw in the fact this is an animated film for kids yet there are a dozen exclamations of the God's name and very little humor and you have a film suited only for ACLU types. An animated tale equipped with heart, humor, blazing action and not a sappy song in earshot. Yes, in a deleted story board scene hints that the Iron Giant isn't the only one of its kind. When the Giant starts to sleep, his "dream" is transmitted to Dean's TV which shows brief footage of other Iron Giants.

However in the "Signature Edition" released in 2015, it is implied that the Iron Giant is the last of his kind, his planet having been destroyed by the war for which he was presumably created.
